According to the Oregonian, Franz Bakery, the largest family owned baker on the west coast, has been named a Save Energy Now Champion by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for reducing energy costs by 15% at its Portland factory.
The DOE conducted an energy analysis through its Industrial Technologies Program.
The bakery installed a catalytic oxidizer in May to remove almost all of the ethanol emissions from its bakery operations.
The DOE program offers energy assessments that, to date, have saved about $218 million in energy costs and reduced 2.3 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions.
