New Energy Technologies of Burtonsville, MD is testing two prototypes of it’s MotionPower kinetic energy capturing technology. The idea is every time a car passes over the MotionPower system it will activate a small generator. The device inherently serves as a speed bump as well.
New Energy Technologies reports their MotionPower would work well at freeway exit ramps, toll booths, stop signs, rest areas, restaurant and bank drive-thrus and virtually any needed traffic calming zone.
The New York Times is reporting that the device was being tested at the Four Seasons in Washington, CD and a Burger King in Hillsdale, NJ. According to the Times:
New Energy Technologies hoped to have its system on the market within one to two years at a cost of $1,500 to $2,000 a unit [they] estimated a MotionPower device would pay for itself in electricity savings within two or three years.
It just might be those speed bumps could now be part of a larger solution.
