On October 1st Phoenix, Arizona based Electric Transportation Engineering Corp (eTec) officially launched the EV Project, reported to be the largest deployment of electric vehicles and charge infrastructure in history.
Working with a $99.8 million grant from the US Department of Energy, eTec is partnering with Nissan North America to deploy up to 4,700 zero-emission electric vehicles, the Nissan LEAF, and 11,210 charging systems to support them in strategic markets in five states: Arizona, California, Oregon, Tennessee, and Washington. The 36 month project will collect and analyze data from the charging stations and help determine successful revenue streams for both commercial and public charge infrastructures.
With Portland, Eugene, Corvalis and Salem slated to receive 2,000 charging stations, 4 of the 11 cities in the project will be in Oregon. Seattle, San Diego, Phoenix, Tucson, Chattanooga, Knoxville and Nashville (US headquarters of Nissan) will also be included in the project.
The project will include charging stations in private residences as well as public spaces like malls and offices. The chargers in residences and offices will be longer term full chargers while mall and public applications will be fast charging systems for a 10-15 minute half charge. Those chosen to be in the program will receive chargers installed by eTec at no cost.

It’s interesting to note that eTec built out charging stations in the Phoenix area once before in the 1990’s. The wave of electric cars never came and the chargers were removed. This time eTec, the Department of Energy, Nissan and many more are banking EVs are here to stay.
