The Oregonian is reporting that South Korean company, Uni-Chem is purchasing the shuttered Hynix memory chip plant in Eugene for $50MM. This is a very interesting development for the solar industry in Oregon. Additionally, it’s a great boost for Eugene given the 1,400 jobs that were lost when the Hynix plant was closed.
Uni-Chem plans to generate solar cells generating a gigwatt of power. It’s estimated that this would equate to 1,000 new jobs in Eugene. The timeline for relaunch is unclear.
It’s worth noting that Uni-Chem’s estimated output is substantially more than SolarWorld’s planned output of 160-megawatts in Hillsboro.
